Deana Harmon, DO - Riverside Women's Care-Hilton Head

I developed an interest in surgical procedures in medical school, but I wanted longer-term relationships with my patients than most surgeons typically have. My work in a women's shelter during my medical school years led me to want to help women specifically. Obstetrics and gynecology allowed me to care for patients throughout each season of their lives - and to provide surgical and procedural care when needed. \n For me, it's the best of two worlds. I treat my patients holistically and consider all aspects of their health - physical, mental, emotional - in order to optimize their gynecological and obstetrical health. \n My patients appreciate that I stay current on advancements in my field. For instance, I've been trained on - and regularly use - the da Vinci robot for minimally invasive procedures. I've been performing robot-assisted surgery since 2012. Being a member of both the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists as well as the American College of Osteopathic Obstetricians and Gynecologists helps me stay up to date on the latest advancements in obstetrics and gynecology. \n I've been fortunate to be involved in leading-edge clinical trials. When I practiced in Tennessee, I participated in clinical trials involving oral GnRH receptor agonists in the treatment of endometriosis and fibroids. These treatments have allowed us to provide more options for these patients with less side effects and to potentially avoid surgery. \n My husband, Jacob, and I have known each other since childhood. Our son keeps us busy with travel soccer. When not at the soccer field, we enjoy traveling and fishing as a family. I enjoy reading, water-related activities and marine biology - an interest that's increased since relocating to the South Carolina coast in 2020.
