Dr. Tanya N. Turan trained in neurology and vascular neurology at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia and was recruited to MUSC in 2008 as an academic clinician. She is a Professor of Neurology with tenure and the Director of the Stroke Neurology Division.Dr. Turan's research activities are focused on understanding the roles of traditional and novel risk factors in stroke-related atherosclerosis. She has been awarded several NIH grants to study novel MR imaging techniques for identifying high-risk, intracranial plaque features. In addition, her research includes directing and overseeing of the intensive risk factor management in the NIH-funded, multi-center clinical trials "Stenting and Aggressive Medical Management for Prevention of Recurrent stroke in Intracranial Stenosis (SAMMPRIS)" and "Carotid Revascularization Endarterectomy and Stenting Trial &- 2 (CREST 2)."Dr. Turan is also the director of MUSC's NIH-StrokeNet Regional Coordinating Center, "Southeast Collaborative Alliance for Stroke Trials (SE-CoAST)." She has published numerous papers and has presented her research at local, national and international conferences. Her clinical interests are in secondary prevention of stroke.
