High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, founded in 1971, is governed by the Houston Independent School District. The school is fully accredited by the state of Texas, and offers the same academic curriculum and graduation requirements as all the district s other high schools. Its curriculum includes English, foreign languages, mathematics, science and technology. It additionally offers study of various arts, including dance, instrumental and vocal music, and theatre and visual arts. It is one of the public schools in the Unites States to offer programs in both the visual and performing arts, and the one of the first such institution in the Southwest. The school s library, Lady Catley Memorial Library, has a huge collection of reference materials on various subjects. It is a National Blue Ribbon School, and is located in Houston.
