The Guilford Historical Society, established in April 1998, was initiated during a Town Community meeting where the idea of creating a historical society was proposed by Tom Gray. With a growing membership that started with just 10 to 20 members, the society has evolved significantly over the years, culminating in the approval of an absolute charter in July 2011.
In December 2015, the society expanded its facilities by acquiring the Presbyterian Church in Guilford Center, a historical structure that allows for the display of its increasing collections. In addition to the church, the society also owns the old Roots Corner's schoolhouse and boasts an extensive research room filled with genealogy resources, school records, and local history documentation.
