When I was growing up, my mother told me I could do anything, and I took that to mean everything. I’ve accomplished a lot over the years, including mentoring young medical students and professionals in dermatology. But working with patients—and getting to know them—is especially rewarding. My area of expertise is skin cancer and Mohs surgery, named after its inventor Dr. Frederic Mohs. I love doing surgery, and this procedure is the most advanced and effective treatment for most skin cancers, as it has a cure rate of up to 99 percent. Every person in the world has 2.5 dermatologic issues during their lifetime—and that can be anything from acne to basal cell carcinoma to eczema to melanoma. Vermont has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the United States, so I am laser focused and dedicated to preventing skin cancer and developing the right care for my patients. My approach to patient care is that we are a team, and I am never satisfied until the patient is satisfied.

Emilie Rainville is a physician assistant in dermatology at the University of Vermont Medical Center.
