Established in 1871, the Blacksburg Police Department is a full-service law enforcement agency that includes more than 70 officers and over 10 civilians. It operates various divisions, including criminal, special and technical investigation units. It offers a range of forensic services and programs associated with drugs, firearms and ammunition, as well as breath alcohol analyses and identification. It also offers photographic and digital imaging and expert witness testimony services. The Blacksburg Police Department employs a motorcycle and bicycle patrol, criminal investigators, school-crossing guards, and crime prevention, correctional and communication officers. It operates an explosive ordnance disposal squad that identifies and disposes improvised hazardous devices, explosive contraband, small arms ammunitions and law enforcement chemicals.
