E&G Franchise Systems owns and operates the Erbert & Gerbert s chain of sub shops. Founded in 1988 by husband and wife Keith & Beth Schippers, the first Erberts & Gerbert s opened in Eau Claire, Wis. The restaurant s name and concept developed out of the childhood stories Kevin's father told of two boys named Erbert and Gerbert Herbert. Each sandwich Erberts & Gerbert s serves is named after a character the boys met as they traveled through time and space. That first sub shop succeeded in part because of the unique sandwich names, such as the Bornk and the Jacob Bluefinger, and also because it offered late-night hours. The first franchise location opened in Duluth, Minn., in 1992. The company now operates nearly 50 company-owned and franchise locations throughout Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota and Colorado.
