Heritage of Elmwood is a non-profit, municipally-owned skilled nursing home with an attached physician clinic, an Alzheimer's unit, and a very active restorative nursing program that augments the work of licensed therapists. The advantage here is obvious " physician involvement in resident care is enhanced as is communication between nurses and physicians, and residents don't have to drive anywhere to visit a physician. Regardless of the weather, the trip to see a physician is just a short comfortable indoor trip down the hallway.We strive to provide the highest quality care at the lowest possible cost. This means that our employees are not the highest paid in the area, nor the lowest, because we believe that staffing levels should be above average ( but not over-staffed ) in order to provide better care. So we tend to spend our money to purchase more hours of care, rather than fewer hours of care at higher wages. Likewise, while we strive to keep our building in good working order, we don't believe in spending money to try to impress you with trendy good looks, so you will not find things here like expensive chandeliers, other expensive decorating, or perfectly manicured lawns. ( You will find orange signs in the building that we kept as a reminder of the colors that were popular when the building opened, but most of the harvest green and gold colors are now gone ).One of the compliments we have heard from visitors and contractors who have done work in the building is that "It doesn't smell like a nursing home in here." Of course, occasional odors do happen, but they generally do not last long. This is the result of good nursing care and cleaning, building design, and a commitment by the Board. The Board wanted the home to smell good, and they chose a more expensive air handling option when the home was built in order to help achieve that.
