Issei Memorial Building

The Issei Memorial Building, originally constructed in 1910 as the Kuwabara Hospital, served as a vital healthcare facility for the Japanese Issei community in San Jose, California. Despite challenges in establishing communication and trust with local doctors, the hospital played a significant role in providing medical services until its closure in 1934. After being repurposed by community members for future generations, the building was renamed the Issei Memorial Building following extensive renovations in 1983. It is now a designated San Jose Historic Landmark, housing various Japanese American organizations and featuring the California Japantown Landmark, which highlights the history and struggles of the Japanese American community in California.
