Nabil Kotbi, M.D.

Nabil Kotbi is licensed psychiatrist and an Associate Professor of Psychiatry. He is board certified in General Psychiatry, Geriatric Psychiatry, Psychosomatic Medicine, Preventive Medicine and Addiction Medicine. He graduated "summa cum laude" from the Casablanca School of Medicine, Hassan II University, Morocco in 1996. He completed his residency at SUNY Downstate Medical Center where he was named Resident of the Year twice and served as Chief Resident for two years. He subsequently completed a selective fellowship in Geriatric Psychiatry in 2006 at New York-Presbyterian, Westchester Division, under the direction of Dr. George Alexopoulos, director of the Weill Cornell Institute of Geriatric Psychiatry.In 2007, he was appointed Chief of "The Haven" a specialized inpatient unit the Weill Cornell Medicine/NYP Westchester Campus. In this capacity, he is an expert diagnostician who tailors interventions to patients experiencing complex co-morbidities including psychiatric, neurological, medical and addiction disorders. The Haven and its staff of interdisciplinary professionals treats patients across a broad developmental lifespan from young adults to the elderly and is a sought out treatment destination for patients of local, national and international locales. Under the direction of Dr. Kotbi, the Haven has grown to acclaim for its focus on highly individualized patient care within a culturally sensitive framework. Dr. Kotbi developed a comprehensive patient approach in collaboration with his clinical treatment team, which includes diagnostic assessment, evidence-based psychotherapeutic and psychopharmacologic treatment and collaborative care planning.In 2010, Dr. Kotbi was also appointed Unit Chief of the Addiction Recovery and Rehabilitation unit of the Weill Cornell Medicine/NYP Westchester Campus, which specializes in the treatment of individuals suffering from primary substance use disorders. In addition to his clinical responsibilities, Dr. Kotbi is actively involved in academic and clinical training. He is a clinical training supervisor of medical students at the clerkship level, adult psychiatry residents and geriatric psychiatry fellows; he is the associate training director of the geriatric psychiatry fellowship program. His teaching and research activities are interdisciplinary. He serves as an instructor of specialized seminars focused on the neurobiology of addiction and intervention techniques for patients with addiction and within the geriatric fellowship track, and teaches an advanced geriatric psychiatry lecture series (including topics such as late-life depressive disorders, geriatric psychopharmacology including drug-drug interactions, and psychodynamic considerations in diagnosis and treatment planning). He also contributes to the education of nursing staff and others by regularly presenting on evidence-based treatments related to psychiatric and addiction related disorders, psychosocial interventions and psychopharmacological agents.Dr Kotbi has been active in clinical research since he joined the faculty at Weill Cornell Medicine. He was a co-investigator in studies of psychotic depression and late-life affective disorders and trials on the long term effects of ECT as a research clinician. His role within these protocols is primarily that of a research clinician. He has published in several journals on topics related to affective disorders in older adults, and he has mentored medical trainees in the practice of publishing on a variety of complex cases at the junction of medico-psychiatric-addiction related topics.Dr. Kotbi maintains a clinical psychiatric practice through the Weill Cornell Physicians Organization and specializes in the treatment of affective disorders, treatment-resistant depression, addiction and personality disorders. Dr. Kotbi has also been serving as a clinical consultant to The International Service at NYP (Cornell and Columbia Medical Schools) where he provides individualized, culturally sensitive care (he is fluent in English, French and Arabic) to international Arabic or French speaking patients admitted across hospital sites.Professional affiliations include active membership in the American Psychiatric Association, the American Association of Geriatric Psychiatry, and the American Society of Addiction Medicine. He has received numerous honors and awards in the past including a 2005 NCDEU NIMH New Investigator Award. He has been interviewed by the New York Times and other media channels on topics across his areas of expertise.
